Report: High Rates of Mental Health Struggles Among Arizona Teens

Adolescents in Arizona face mental health challenges at higher rates compared to their peers in other states, according to a new report titled The State of Adolescent Health in Arizona, released by the Arizona Alliance for Adolescent Health. Despite this, many young people in Arizona are not receiving the necessary help and support.

One of the main concerns highlighted in the report is the lack of access to basic healthcare for Arizona teens. Compared to younger children, adolescents are less likely to have health insurance or receive regular well visits. Matt Jewett, director of health policy with the Children’s Action Alliance, emphasized that addressing these issues is crucial for adolescence playing a crucial role in setting the foundation for a person’s future health and well-being.

Approximately one in six Arizona adolescents experienced a major depressive episode in the past year, making it the ninth-highest rate in the nation. Shockingly, only 30% of adolescents in crisis received treatment within the state. This highlights a need for improvement as many young people are not receiving the necessary help and support.

However, there is hope for improvement as a recent expansion of Arizona’s Medicaid program will make thousands more children eligible for health coverage this year. By increasing access to healthcare services, more adolescents in Arizona can receive the necessary support to address their mental health needs and lead happier, healthier lives.
