Hialeah Man Arrested for Running Large Cockfighting Operation – NBC 6 South Florida

On Thursday, 58-year-old Juan Romero was arrested in Hialeah for his involvement in a large cockfighting operation. According to an arrest report, Romero was arrested for owning, breeding, training and possessing animals for fighting.

The police had initially been conducting a fraud investigation in the 4600 block of E. 10th Lane when they stumbled upon a large number of cages housing male chickens. Some of the chickens had their feathers plucked, indicating that they were being used for cockfighting.

As investigators continued their search, they found more chickens in cages and red foam mimicking the shape of a chicken used to train chickens to fight. Eventually, they made contact with Romero, who admitted that he owned the chickens. He allowed them inside his business, where they discovered a cockfighting ring and more chickens.

In total, approximately 160 fighting roosters were found on the property. The police determined that Romero was breeding and training these roosters for fighting and keeping them at his place of business.

Romero was taken into custody and booked. It is unclear if he has an attorney. On Friday, aerial footage from the scene showed some of the chickens still in cages behind the business.
