Extradition of Assange to the US delayed

The United States will not extradite Julian Assange for at least three weeks, as British justice has requested new guarantees from the United States regarding his treatment. The British judges have given the American authorities until the deadline to provide these guarantees, as Assange faces charges for leaking confidential documents.

The U.S. is being asked to ensure that Assange can benefit from the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which protects freedom of expression. If the guarantees are not presented within the three-week deadline, Assange will be able to appeal against his extradition, which was accepted by the London Government in June 2022.

Assange was arrested in 2019 after spending seven years in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden. President Joe Biden has been called upon to drop charges against Assange, as his health has been deteriorating during his time in prison. His defense argues that the trial against him is political and that extradition would endanger his health and life.

The court will have to decide whether the guarantees provided by the U.S. are satisfactory or not. The U.S government has assured that Assange will not be put in maximum security prison if extradited and that he will receive necessary clinical and psychological assistance. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia has denounced the persecution of Assange by the U.S justice system and Parliament has called for an end to this persecution.

Assange’s lawyers argue that he is being prosecuted for journalistic practices of obtaining and publishing information, while the US government argues that he knowingly published names of individuals who served as sources for the US.

The decision on whether or not to grant extradition rests with British justice and it remains uncertain what will happen next for Julian Assange once this deadline expires.
