Canada secures first victory at T20 World Cup by defeating Ireland

The surprise victory of the USA over Pakistan in Texas has caused a stir in the group, making this match even more crucial for Ireland’s aspirations to reach the Super 8s. The pitch at the New York stadium, which had been meticulously examined, was stripped of its grass and rolled by groundsman Damian Hough right up until the last minute. Despite a small crowd of 5,153 spectators, Canada put up a respectable total against Ireland.

Kirton, a former West Indies Under-19 player who hails from Barbados, played well as Canada hit 13 fours and two sixes in their innings. Craig Young’s over was costly as Kirton hit two sixes down the ground. Shreyas Movva also contributed with 37 runs from 36 balls. Ireland struggled with their batting after their heavy defeat to India, losing key wickets due to both good bowling and poor shot selection.

Stirling got out top-edging a pull shot, while Tector was bowled by a clever delivery from left-arm spinner Saad Bin Zafar. Tucker’s needless run-out further dented Ireland’s hopes. Although Adair and Dockrell briefly raised Irish spirits with some sixes, they couldn’t make up for their lack of boundaries. As an Associate member of the ICC, Canada sealed a deserved victory this time, showing composure in a pressure situation unlike in their game against the USA.
