Center for Purposeful Work’s EXDS s13: Business and Marketing Strategies Practicum Led by Two Bates College Students

In this course, Chuck James ’78 and Ann Clark Tucker ’78 will share their expertise in marketing, sales, international business, and corporate communications. They will cover a range of topics, including business strategy, product development, marketing, sustainability, and decision-making processes.

Through the case method approach of the course, students will have the opportunity to work on rapid business problem-solving in-class. The instructors will also provide guidance on finding a job, the qualities of a successful candidate, and navigating the workplace after Bates.

The final project for the course will require students to create a formal business plan for launching a new product or service as part of a team-based endeavor. The course covers topics such as systems thinking, leadership and ethics, business communications, business problem-solving, team structure, and rapid product/service ideation.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to analyze and interpret business news and data in the media with critical thinking skills. They will be able to effectively work in a team environment to optimize their skills and talents while understanding systems thinking’s application to business strategy and decision-making. Additionally, they will have experience developing prototypes of products or services through MashUp Innovation techniques and gain valuable job interview practice with resume writing skills as well as networking abilities.
