Reference for Equitable Language in Pragmatic Trials Provided by Health Equity Core on March 28, 2024

Dr. Rosa Gonzalez-Guarda, co-chair of the Health Equity Core in the NIH Pragmatic Trials Collaboratory, has been at the forefront of promoting respectful and inclusive language in research. The Equitable Language Cheat Sheet, developed under her leadership, is a valuable resource for researchers and partners working with diverse populations.

The cheat sheet provides essential guidelines for communication, covering preferred terminology for various identities such as age, race and ethnicity, gender, differing abilities, drug/substance abuse, underserved populations, and partners and populations of focus. By using inclusive language and respecting individual preferences for identification when collaborating with diverse populations in research, researchers can foster a more equitable approach to healthcare.

In addition to offering guidance on language use, the Health Equity Core provides direction on integrating a health equity perspective in pragmatic clinical research. The Core works to identify barriers to achieving health equity in research and develops strategies and tools to promote a more inclusive approach in pragmatic trials. The Equitable Language Cheat Sheet is just one example of how the Core is working to address biases and advance health equity in research settings.

Dr. Gonzalez-Guarda emphasized the importance of respecting individual preferences for identification when collaborating with diverse populations in research. “Using inclusive language and respecting individual preferences for identification is essential when working with diverse populations,” she said. “The cheat sheet serves as a valuable tool for researchers who may not have direct input from the communities they are working with.”

The Health Equity Core’s mission is to promote health equity by identifying barriers to achieving it in research settings and developing strategies to overcome them. With the release of the Equitable Language Cheat Sheet, researchers now have a valuable tool that can help them communicate more effectively with diverse populations while fostering an equitable approach to healthcare.
