Pernille Blume, Olympic swimming champion, joins World Aquatics Bureau

Pernille Blume is a highly accomplished swimmer who has represented Denmark in the Olympics three times. She won gold in the 50m freestyle at the Rio 2016 Olympics and is also a double Olympic bronze medallist and three-time World Champion. In addition to her impressive athletic career, Blume works in the health and wellness field and created an online wellness platform called Align by Blume.

As part of her work with World Aquatics, Blume serves on a Bureau that includes 18 national-level aquatics athletes, many of whom have competed at the Olympic Games and won numerous championship titles. The organization is committed to promoting an inclusive community where both men and women have equal opportunities in decision-making processes.

Recently, World Aquatics welcomed nine new women to its Bureau, bringing the total number of female members to 15 out of 39. This represents a significant step towards achieving gender balance within the organization, with President Husain Al-Musallam stating that he hopes to see a 50-50 split between genders in future Bureau compositions.

The Bureau is made up of the World Aquatics President and 39 other members, including Continental Representatives, World-at-Large representatives, and the Athletes’ Committee Chairperson. Each member serves for a four-year term that can be renewed twice before being voted on again at a future Congress.
