Rep. Sewell to hold online forum for Mental Health Awareness Month

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, AL-07, will host a virtual discussion entitled “Mental Health is Health: Overcoming the Stigma and Breaking Down Barriers to Care.” The event will take place today, May 29 at 3 p.m. CDT. Joining Rep. Sewell will be Dr. Nadia Richardson, Founder and CEO of the Black Women’s Mental Health Institute in Birmingham, and Ms. Tyrinda Hall, Chief of Mental Health for the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System.

The virtual discussion will focus on the importance of mental health to our overall well-being, the need to reduce the stigma of mental illness, and the resources available to veterans and others managing a mental health condition. It will be streamed on Sewell’s official social media pages, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Health, 1 in 5 Americans experiences mental illness yet less than half seek treatment. In response to this crisis, Congress designated 988 as the National Suicide Prevention and Crisis Lifeline in 2020 providing 24/7 free and confidential support for individuals in distress.

As we continue to prioritize our physical health during this pandemic it is crucial that we also prioritize our mental well-being by addressing stigma around mental illness and ensuring access to resources for those who need it most. This virtual discussion aims to shed light on these important issues while also providing practical advice for seeking help if needed.

Join us today at 3 p.m. CDT as we come together for an insightful conversation about mental health and how we can break down barriers to care for ourselves and those around us.
