Report: Chiefs defensive end BJ Thompson showing signs of improvement following cardiac arrest

On August 19, 2023, during a game against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium, BJ Thompson, a backup defensive end for the Kansas City Chiefs, experienced a medical emergency. Thompson suffered a seizure and went into cardiac arrest during a special teams meeting, prompting him to be rushed to the hospital. Fortunately, Thompson was reported to be in stable condition and later described as “awake and responsive” by his agent, Chris Turnage.

As a result of Thompson’s medical emergency, the Chiefs canceled team practice and media availability on Thursday. The incident marked the first time that the Chiefs had canceled team activities since their Super Bowl victory in February 2019. The team is set to finish OTA workouts shortly before heading into mandatory minicamp on June 11 and official training camp scheduled to start in July.

Despite the frightening incident, it appears that Thompson’s prognosis is positive and he is on the road to recovery. The Chiefs have not yet made any public statement regarding Thompson’s status for upcoming games or practices. However, they are currently reviewing their policies on player safety and well-being in light of this incident.
