Li Bingjie Sets the Pace in 200 Freestyle

On the third day of the World Championships in Doha, Li Bingjie took first place in the 200 free prelims. Erika Fairweather was also in the race and led by a second at the final turn, but Li managed to overtake her and win with a time of 1:57.16 to 1:57.40. Siobhan Haughey, an Olympic silver medalist who will compete in tonight’s 100m breaststroke final, came close to breaking the world record with a time of 56.07 in the fifth and final heat. However, she slowed down in the second half of the race and was passed by Nikolett Padar of Hungary on the last 50 meters. Janna van Kooten, a member of the Netherlands’ winning team in the 4×100 free relay at last year’s Asian Games, finished 16th and just missed qualifying for the semifinals with a time of 1:59.41.
