Office for Science and Society Celebrates 25th Anniversary of OSS

As a journalist, I had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Joe Schwarcz, the Director of McGill OSS, for a fascinating conversation about the history and highlights of the Office for Science and Society over the past 25 years. The discussion delved into the challenges and exciting activities undertaken by the OSS, with some fun demonstrations sprinkled throughout.

The event will take place on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at McGill University’s campus located at 801 Sherbrooke Street, at the corner of Sherbrooke and University. The reception will start at 6:30 PM followed by the main event at 7 PM. Registration is required to secure your spot at this engaging and informative discussion between Josh Freed and Dr. Joe Schwarcz.

The Office for Science and Society has been an integral part of McGill University for over two decades, providing students with hands-on experience in science research and education. The OSS has been instrumental in developing innovative programs that have helped shape tomorrow’s scientists.

During our conversation, Dr. Schwarcz shared some of the challenges faced by the OSS in recent years but also highlighted some of their successes. He spoke about how they have managed to remain relevant in a rapidly changing world while staying true to their mission of promoting science education.

One highlight was their recent collaboration with local high schools to create science fair competitions that encourage young minds to explore STEM fields. This initiative has not only provided students with valuable learning experiences but has also helped identify future scientists who could benefit from further education in these areas.

Throughout our conversation, Josh Freed posed thought-provoking questions that challenged Dr. Schwarcz to think critically about his work with the OSS. These questions sparked lively debates between them, which kept attendees engaged throughout the evening.

Overall, this event promises to be an entertaining as well as educational experience for anyone interested in science education and research at McGill University.
