El Paso starts National Public Health Week with a BARK!

El Paso’s Department of Public Health (DPH) is celebrating National Public Health Week from April 1-7 with a weeklong celebration aimed at educating the community, recognizing the contributions of public health, and highlighting important issues for improving public health nationwide. This year’s theme, “Protecting, Connecting and Thriving: We Are All Public Health,” emphasizes the importance of individual contributions to community and planetary health.

To kick off the celebration, DPH organized walks across the city to promote healthy neighborhoods. On Tuesday, they held a Doggie Walk at Joey Barraza and Vino Memorial Park and a Glow Walk at Vista del Valle Park. These events included activities and raffles for attendees to participate in.

Throughout the week, DPH has scheduled various events aimed at engaging the community in activities that promote biodiversity, climate change resilience, use of innovative tools in public health, and preparedness for emergencies. On Wednesday, they hosted a Franklin Mountains Trail Clean up to encourage community members to take part in maintaining the natural beauty of their surroundings. On Thursday, seniors were invited to attend educational topics at the Fabens Senior Center. A Sexual Reproductive Health presentation was held at the Pride Center on Friday, while an Emergency Preparedness Carnival took place at Armijo Library on Saturday.
