Sources say AAC considering Tim Pernetti, sports executive, for next commissioner

The American Athletic Conference (AAC) is currently on the hunt for a new commissioner, and sources have confirmed that Tim Pernetti is being targeted for the position. With a wealth of experience in the college sports industry, Pernetti is well-equipped to take on this role.

Pernetti previously served as athletic director at Rutgers and has a strong television background, having worked for CSTV, ABC Sports, and ABC Enhanced TV. In addition to his experience in college sports, Pernetti has also worked as Chief Business Officer for New York City FC of the Major League Soccer (MLS).

Recently, the AAC has undergone significant changes with the addition of Rice, UTSA, North Texas, FAU, UAB, and Charlotte to the conference. The league currently has a television contract with ESPN that extends through the 2031-32 academic year.

With his diverse background in television and college sports, Pernetti would bring a unique set of skills to the commissioner role. He began his career at CSTV and has since worked in various capacities in television and college sports. Despite a controversial departure from Rutgers following the Mike Rice scandal, Pernetti has quickly reemerged as a prominent executive in the college sports industry.

The trend of non-traditional hires in the commissioner space is becoming increasingly common. Brett Yormark of the Big 12 and Jim Phillips of the ACC are just two examples of executives who have come from outside traditional backgrounds to take on these roles. Given his diverse background and experience in both television and college sports, Pernetti would be an excellent fit for the AAC Commissioner role.
