Fire destroys Mt. Vernon business in the early morning hours

The Phoenix Tops family-owned and operated business, located just east of Mt. Vernon, was destroyed by a fire that broke out on Saturday morning. Upon arrival at the scene in the 400 block of Meadowbrook, Jefferson Fire officials reported seeing flames blowing through the garage door and heavy smoke billowing from the building.

The fire quickly spread throughout the 50 by 150-foot structure, with the roof eventually collapsing into the building. Heck’s Excavating was called in to help put out the fire by removing the roof and most of the remaining walls. The State Fire Marshal’s office was also called to investigate the cause of the fire.

Despite concerns about water availability, Jefferson Fire received mutual aid assistance from several neighboring departments, including Bluford, Kell, Mt Vernon City, Centralia Fire Protection District, Woodlawn, Ashley, Waltonville, and Wayne City.
