Expansion planned for organization providing housing to families of VA health care system patients in Pittsburgh area

In the Pittsburgh area, Fisher House provides free housing for families of military members and veterans who travel long distances to receive care at VA hospitals. The organization has a housing center next to the VA hospital in Oakland that accommodates 10 families at a time. This comfortable place to stay can alleviate some of the stress that comes with having a loved one in the hospital, saving families an average of $1,900 during their six-day stay.

Fisher House is currently planning to expand its services by building a new facility in O’Hara Township, which is expected to open in 2026. This new facility will provide housing for even more families, including those with relatives in nursing homes, hospice care or rehab at the VA hospital. The cost to build a Fisher House is $9 million, and the organization is working to raise $3 million in funding.

The Fisher House is seeking corporate sponsorships to help bridge the gap in funding for the new facility. They hope to continue providing support and housing for military and veteran families in need. With the help of donations and community support, they can make a difference in the lives of those who sacrifice so much for our country.
