ASU’s Ding dominates college event, possibly breaking NCAA record

Wenyi Ding, a freshman at Arizona State, recently won the prestigious Amer Ari Invitational by nine shots, with a 10-under 62 in the final round. This led to a 27-under 189 total, believed to be an NCAA men’s 54-hole scoring record, according to College Golf Book.

Ding’s record-tying round included 10 birdies and no bogeys, and it followed rounds of 63-64. Ding, the 2022 U.S. Junior champion, is ranked No. 13 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

The success of this college career start has never been seen before. Ding led the field to victory at the Amer Ari Invitational while Washington’s Finn Koelle and San Jose State’s Carl Corpus tied for second at 18 under. North Carolina’s David Ford and Auburn’s Jackson Koivun tied for fourth with Texas Tech’s Matthew Comegys at 17 under.

In the team competition, North Carolina took the title at 68 under, five shots clear of Arizona State. Auburn was third at 58 under. The team competition was very close and anyone could have won it on any given day.

Further down the leaderboard, Stanford dropped four places on the final day despite the return of star Michael Thorbjornsen from injury
