Science center says upside-down sea turtle found by Florida beachgoers survives

A lethargic and emaciated juvenile green sea turtle was recently found stranded upside down in Daytona Beach. Video footage captured the turtle being turned right-side up by witnesses before being taken by Volusia County Beach Safety for medical treatment at the Ponce Inlet Marine Science Center’s sea turtle hospital. The turtle is now receiving care, including fluids and antibiotics, but its prognosis is guarded.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) emphasized the importance of not disturbing sea turtles on Florida beaches during the busy summer months. Any disruptions or distractions can have a negative impact on the turtles, such as causing them to return to the ocean prematurely or be led away from the water. FWC advised against using flashlights, flash photography, or video equipment around sea turtles as this can interfere with their natural behavior.

If someone comes across a stranded or dead sea turtle, witnesses someone disturbing a sea turtle or its nest, or sees a hatchling heading away from the water, FWC recommends calling their Division of Law Enforcement. The hotline number is 1-888-404-FWCC (3922) or *FWC (*392). More information on how to help protect sea turtles can be found on the FWC’s website.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting and protecting sea turtles while enjoying Florida’s beaches during the summer season.
