Interest rates in Europe lowered for the first time in half a decade

The European Central Bank (ECB) recently made a significant move by reducing its reference interest rates by 25 basis points, marking the first decrease since 2019. This decision was based on a thorough assessment of inflation outlook, impact factors, and the strength of the monetary policy shift. After nine months of unchanged interest rates, the ECB found it necessary to loosen its tightening stance.

Inflationary pressures still exist in the euro area, but the ECB has raised its inflation forecast for this year to 2.5% and for next year to 2.2%. The cooling of prices in the eurozone compared to the high inflation experienced in 2022 can be attributed to falling fuel costs and supply chains returning to normal after the pandemic.

Europe is leading the way in lowering interest rates, with the US Federal Reserve (Fed) still hesitant to do so due to rising inflation rates. Analysts have expressed concerns that if Europe lowers interest rates before the US, it could lead to a drop in the value of the euro and potentially harm the eurozone economy. However, ECB President Christine Lagarde has assured that her decisions are data-driven and not influenced by external factors such as the Fed’s policy.

Canada became the first G7 country to cut interest rates in June, followed by Sweden and Switzerland earlier in the year. These reductions in interest rates signal a global shift in monetary policy aimed at combating inflation pressures and supporting economic recovery.
