Greenhouse gas emissions in the EU economy decrease by 4.0%

In the fourth quarter of 2023, the EU’s gross domestic product (GDP) saw a slight increase of 0.2% compared to the same quarter in 2022, according to Eurostat. The data also revealed notable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions in sectors such as electricity and gas supply (-17.2%) and manufacturing (-3.1%), while household emissions remained relatively stable.

Greenhouse gas emissions decreased in 22 EU countries when compared to the same period in 2022, with Estonia, Bulgaria, and Finland seeing the largest reductions at -23.0%, -17.0%, and -9.0% respectively. Interestingly, out of the 22 countries with decreased emissions, only Hungary managed to keep its GDP stable despite reducing emissions, while ten other countries saw a decline in their GDP along with a decrease in emissions. The remaining eleven countries actually managed to decrease emissions while growing their GDP.

On the other hand, there were increases in emissions in countries like Malta (+7.7%), Slovenia (+5.6%), Cyprus (+2.3%), Slovakia (+1.7%), and Greece (+0.3%). Despite this, all five countries also saw an increase in their GDP, indicating a complex relationship between economic growth and greenhouse gas emissions.

Overall, these findings suggest that while some progress has been made towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the EU’s economy, more work needs to be done to address this issue fully.

In summary, although there was a slight increase in EU’s GDP by 0.2%, it is worth noting that there were significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions across various sectors such as electricity and gas supply and manufacturing during the fourth quarter of 20
