Jakeem Grant to audition for Jets this week

The upcoming Jets minicamp is uncertain for edge rusher Haason Reddick, but veteran kick returner Jakeem Grant is expected to attend. Although not currently on the Jets’ roster, NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero reports that Grant will participate in the minicamp on a tryout basis.

Grant has been sidelined due to injuries over the past two seasons. In August 2022, he suffered a torn Achilles in Browns camp, and then tore his patellar tendon during Cleveland’s final preseason game last year. Prior to his time with the Browns, Grant made significant contributions as a return specialist for the Dolphins and Bears. Throughout his career, he has scored four punt return and two kickoff return touchdowns.

With the NFL’s new kickoff rules expected to lead to more returns, Grant could potentially be a valuable asset for the Jets’ special teams unit. The team has also added former Bear Tarik Cohen and Xavier Gipson during this offseason. These additions could enhance the Jets’ special teams performance and provide depth in the return game.

The minicamp will provide an opportunity for Grant to prove himself as a valuable addition to the Jets’ roster. If he performs well, he could potentially earn a spot on the team or at least contribute as a backup kick returner.
