World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest begins with Day 1 kickoff

The Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest is set to kick off on Wednesday, with the first day featuring Barbecue Sauce Wrestling. Gates will open at 5 p.m. and the Lighting of the Grill ceremony will follow at 5:30 p.m. The contest will run from Wednesday, June 15 to Sunday, June 18, bringing together teams from over 22 states and five countries to compete for the title of the ‘Super Bowl of Swine’.

Organizers anticipate a large turnout with thousands of people expected to attend the festival. Visitors can enjoy barbecue from four renowned barbecue restaurants, including BBQ Alley with Big Green Egg & Friends and sample offerings from other vendors such as Kingsford Tour of Champions. Tickets for the event can be purchased online for $25 or in-person on the day of the event for $15. Single-day tickets are also available for $15.

Considered one of the most prestigious barbecue contests in the world, teams will battle it out for bragging rights at Liberty Park this year, a change from the usual venue at Tom Lee Park.
