CBS Sports labels RB room as a ‘work in progress’

In the upcoming 2024 season, the Chargers will see a new mix of running backs in their backfield following Austin Ekeler’s departure. The team has added Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins to lead the group, with CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan labeling their running back room as a “work in progress” in his tier ranking.

Sullivan’s assessment of the Chargers’ running backs is centered around the team’s recent signings of Edwards and Dobbins, who were previously part of the Ravens backfield. While Dobbins has faced injury setbacks, including a torn Achilles last season, Edwards has been a reliable player coming off a successful 13-touchdown campaign.

Despite concerns over Dobbins’ injury history, there is optimism surrounding both players’ potential in the Chargers’ offense. Both Edwards and Dobbins are well-versed in Greg Roman’s offensive system, having played together in Baltimore. Their combined talents, diverse skill sets, and familiarity with the scheme bode well for a strong running game this season.

Additionally, rookie Kimani Vidal, who was a standout performer at Troy University, adds depth to the Chargers’ backfield. Vidal brings a mix of explosiveness, vision, contact balance, lateral agility, and receiving skills that could make an impact early in his professional career. With a mix of seasoned veterans and promising rookies, the Chargers’ running back room appears poised for success in the upcoming season.
