Nokia CEO Successfully Initiates World’s First Call Using “Immersive Audio, Video” Technology

Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark unveiled a groundbreaking technology during a news conference at the GSMA’s 2023 Mobile World Congress, known as “immersive audio and video.” This innovation promises to enhance the quality of phone calls by providing three-dimensional sound, making interactions more realistic and lifelike. Unlike the current monophonic phone calls that compress audio elements and lack detail, this technology aims to provide a more authentic experience.

Nokia Technologies President Jenni Lukander highlighted the benefits of this new technology, explaining that it allows callers to hear everything as if they were physically present together. The demonstration call was made by Nokia using a regular smartphone over a public 5G network and involved Finland’s Ambassador of Digitalisation and New Technologies, Stefan Lindström.

Lukander mentioned that the technology is in the process of standardization, enabling network providers, chipset manufacturers, and handset manufacturers to incorporate it into their products. In addition to person-to-person immersive calls, this technology can also be utilized for conference calls, where participants’ voices can be separated based on their spatial locations.

Nokia’s head of audio research, Jyri Huopaniemi, explained that most smartphones already have the necessary hardware to implement this technology, utilizing the spatial characteristics of calls in real-time. The technology is part of the upcoming 5G Advanced standard, and Nokia is exploring licensing opportunities with the aim of making it widely available in the future.

Lundmark’s demonstration highlighted the potential of immersive audio and video technology to revolutionize the way we communicate over phone calls. This innovation has significant implications for businesses that rely on effective communication between teams working remotely or in different locations around the world. With immersive audio and video calls, teams can now communicate with each other as if they were in the same room.
