Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), the head of the Palestinian Authority, arrived in Doha on February 11th. His objective was to meet with members of Hamas’ Politburo. The Qatari government is currently acting as a mediator in negotiations between Hamas and Israel, and Abbas sought the Qatari government’s assistance in organizing a meeting with Hamas political leaders.
Abbas had a plan to invite the leaders to form a technocrat-led government within the Palestinian Authority. This new government would be responsible for overseeing the restoration of Gaza Strip. The body created by the PA government would be under international control, allowing for funds to be transferred for reconstruction purposes.
The meeting between Abbas and Hamas’ Politburo was successful, and they agreed to work together towards a peaceful resolution of their differences. The formation of a technocrat-led government within the Palestinian Authority is seen as a positive step towards rebuilding Gaza Strip and bringing stability to the region.
