Newly Elected Panama President Constructs Cabinet Focused on Business-friendly Policies

Panama President-elect Jose Raul Mulino has announced his first cabinet selections, signaling the formation of a business-friendly administration. Among his picks are business leader Felipe Chapman for the economy and finance minister role, and economist Javier Martinez-Acha as the foreign minister. Mulino emphasized the importance of surrounding himself with the best people for the task of leading the country.

Felipe Chapman, son of former Planning Minister Guillermo Chapman, brings a solid background in business leadership. Analysts from BancTrust & Co. view his appointment as a positive step towards ensuring sound fiscal management in the coming years. Julio Molto, who previously served as the head of national police under former President Ricardo Martinelli, was named trade minister. Martinelli’s influence can be seen in Mulino’s cabinet choices as he was initially supposed to run for president before being disqualified. As trade minister, Molto will oversee the closure of First Quantum copper mine in Panama. With these early appointments, Mulino is setting the stage for his upcoming inauguration and the start of his term as president next month.
