Android 15 to restrict app downloads on outdated OS versions

Google has announced that it is increasing the security threshold for installing applications on obsolete versions of its mobile operating system. From Android 15, apps will need to target at least Android 7.0 Nougat to be downloaded in parallel.

In a bid to improve the security and performance of its mobile operating system, Google has introduced a new security feature in the second preview of Android 15 Developer. This feature prevents the installation of apps from outside the Google Play Store with an SDK level lower than 24. This change aims to protect mobile devices by blocking insecure apps that do not have the latest security features.

Any attempt to download an app targeting an outdated version of Android will trigger a warning dialog informing the user that the app has been blocked due to security concerns. This change aligns with Google’s efforts to improve the security and performance of its mobile operating system.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow, released in 2015, introduced significant changes to the operating system to enhance battery life and privacy protection. With this new security threshold in Android 15, Google aims to ensure that apps are compatible with modern security standards.

This change follows a similar one that Google made with Android 14, which required apps to be compatible with at least Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The continued evolution of Android’s security features reflects Google’s commitment to providing users with a safe and secure mobile experience.

Google’s efforts towards enhancing its mobile operating system’s security have led it to introduce this new feature aimed at protecting mobile devices from malicious and unsecured apps.
