Iowa High School Sports Awards: Top Coaches of the Year

On Monday night, at the Hoyt-Sherman Place in Des Moines, Iowa High School Sports Awards presented by SCHEELS recognized Ankeny boys track and field coach Jordan Mullen and Clear Creek-Amana girls basketball coach PJ Sweeney as the Boys and Girls Coaches of the Year. The event, which honored over 250 Iowa student-athletes, was a celebration of excellence in high school sports.

Mullen’s guidance led Ankeny to its first boys track and field state title in 49 years. Under his tutelage, the team set records and scored a remarkable 112 points, surpassing any other boys team in state meet history. Mullen’s focus on building a well-rounded team with strength in sprinting, jumping, distance, and other areas paid off with this impressive achievement.

On the other hand, Sweeney led Clear Creek-Amana to its first-ever Class 4A state title with an undefeated 26-0 season. Known for their strong defense, the Clippers limited opponents and secured victories throughout their season. Sweeney’s goal of bringing excitement to girls basketball at CCA has been achieved with three state tournament appearances in five years and now a championship title to their name.
