Nine consecutive months of record-breaking heat, with February being the hottest on record

In February, global temperatures were exceptionally high, with four consecutive days even two degrees warmer compared to pre-industrial times. This made it the hottest month in the history of measurements, according to the EU’s Copernicus service. The average global temperature for February was 1.77 degrees Celsius warmer than the reference point (1850-1900).

During the first half of February, sea temperatures also broke heat records worldwide, surpassing the previous record from August by a little over 21 degrees. The rising sea temperatures led to more moisture in the atmosphere, resulting in stronger and more abundant rainfall.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned that global warming is likely to exceed the critical 1.5-degree limit permanently in the early part of the next decade. This underscores the urgent need for action to mitigate the impacts of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
