80th Anniversary of D-Day Commemorated in Normandy

102-year-old US Navy veteran Robert Persichitti, a World War II hero, has passed away while traveling to France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The news was shared by Honor Flight Rochester, a veterans organization that he was planning to attend the ceremonies in Normandy.

According to Richard Stewart, President and CEO of Honor Flight Rochester, Persichitti was an easygoing and humble person who loved talking about his experiences. He expressed his sadness at the loss of this remarkable man who had made such a significant impact on their community. Although Persichitti couldn’t make it to Normandy, he had served in the Pacific as a radioman on the USS Eldorado during WWII. His tours of duty included significant battles at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and Guam. For his service, he was inducted into the New York State Senate Veterans Hall of Fame in 2020.

While en route to Normandy for the ceremonies, Persichitti fell ill while in Germany. His friend Al DeCarlo was traveling with him and shared that he was airlifted to the hospital but passed away soon after. Despite struggling with heart problems in the past, Persichitti had been in excellent health for his age of 102 as noted by Stewart. Born in a small coal mining town near Pittsburgh and having humble beginnings, Persichitti went on to work as a carpentry teacher in Rochester, New York and even earned a degree from SUNY Buffalo in 1972. His life and service have left an indelible mark on those who knew him.

In conclusion, Robert Persichitti’s passing marks not only the loss of a brave soldier but also an end to an era when heroes like him were commonplace. His legacy will live on through those he inspired and those whose lives he touched during his time here on earth.

As Richard Stewart put it “Robert Persichiti is truly one of our nation’s greatest treasures.”
