In Hawaii, the Department of Health’s Food and Drug Branch has issued a voluntary recall for four salad kits sold at Walmart and Costco. These products, made by Ready Pac Foods, Inc., contain cheese from Rizo Lopez Foods which were previously recalled due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. As of now, there have been no reported adverse effects from the salad kits.
Listeria monocytogenes is a serious infection that can cause listeriosis, which can be fatal in some cases. The disease mainly affects pregnant women, newborns, older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems. It can cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant women. Healthy people may experience symptoms such as fever, severe headache, muscle aches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain or diarrhea within several days of consuming the contaminated food. Symptoms may develop up to two months later. Antibiotics are used to treat listeriosis.
