Taiwan criticizes China for accepting global attention on earthquake, calls them ‘shameless’

After a devastating 7.2 earthquake hit Taiwan’s eastern region, killing ten people and causing widespread damage, China’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the U.N., Geng Shuang, brought up the topic of children’s rights in a meeting. However, his comments sparked anger in Taipei as he referred to the quake in “China’s Taiwan,” despite China claiming Taiwan as its own territory and having no say in how Taiwan chooses its leaders.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry quickly condemned China as “shameless” for using the earthquake to conduct cognitive operations internationally. The ministry expressed gratitude to the international community for their sympathy and support but stressed that Taiwan has already thanked governments and leaders for their messages of concern and support, including the United States, despite the lack of diplomatic ties.

The ministry added that China’s actions show no goodwill towards Taiwan, using the earthquake as a means of psychological warfare. This behavior only highlights the strained relations between the two countries, with Taiwan asserting its independence and China claiming it as a part of its territory.
