Six Mountaineers from the class of 2023-24 honored as Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars

Six exceptional student-athletes from App State have been named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by Diverse magazine for the 2023-24 academic year. The honorees include Chad Bellis (wrestling), Alexia Grant (women’s basketball), Nicholas Grizales (wrestling), Cierra Huntley (volleyball), Niejel Wilkins (men’s track & field) and Maya Winterhoff (volleyball).

The Diverse: Issues In Higher Education edition recognizes outstanding young minority men and women who have excelled in both their academic and athletic pursuits. Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars are students of color who have maintained a minimum 3.5 cumulative grade point average, are at least sophomores academically, and have been actively involved on their campuses or in their communities.

Being named as an Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar is a prestigious honor that highlights the achievements of these outstanding individuals. It is a testament to the hard work and dedication of these student-athletes, who have balanced the demands of both academics and sports.
