Yesterday’s solar flare is the strongest in nearly ten years.

The National Space Weather Laboratory, part of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), reported a new solar flare yesterday. The active region AR3664 produced a powerful solar flare (category X8.79) at 10:51 a.m. Mexico City time, the most intense of the current cycle. Impacts on the ionosphere over the country are expected. Meanwhile, NASA explained that sunspots, like AR3664, are cooler and darker areas on the Sun’s surface where magnetic fields are strong, affecting heat reaching the surface.

The eruption from sunspot region 3664 is 17 times larger than Earth and shows that its activity has not ceased. Sunspots form in areas where magnetic fields are strong and prevent some of the Sun’s heat from reaching the surface.
