New Technology Helps Sparks Police Detect Gunshots

The Sparks Marina experienced a shooting incident on Sunday that left four people injured. In response, the Sparks Police Department quickly identified the location of the shots fired using their ShotSpotter technology. This is one of the rare occasions where the ShotSpotter alerts were accompanied by multiple 911 calls. Normally, gunshots often go unreported, making it challenging for law enforcement to respond promptly. Over the past year, the SPD has been utilizing ShotSpotter to pinpoint areas where gunshots are occurring, joining over 160 cities who have also adopted this technology.

Lieutenant John Patton, a detective with the SPD, stated that the ShotSpotter system has enabled officers to respond more accurately and swiftly to incidents. The technology consists of hundreds of acoustic sensors strategically placed within a four-square mile radius, although the exact locations are unknown to the police. SoundThinking, the company responsible for installing the sensors, sought approval from community members to place them in various locations. When a gunshot is detected, the sensor records the time and sound, which is then verified by humans before notifying officers and dispatch.
