Jackson County stadium measure fails, Chiefs and Royals suffer defeat

Kansas City Royals and Chiefs stadium projects faced a major setback on Tuesday as Jackson County residents rejected the sales tax measure, despite polls closing at 7 p.m. local time. The ballot item was the biggest in the Missouri general municipal election, and it would have imposed a 3/8th-cent sales tax to fund new downtown Kauffman Stadium for the Royals and renovations to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs’ home stadium, GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, is one of the oldest active NFL stadiums, having opened on Aug. 12, 1972, with several renovations over the years. Meanwhile, Kauffman Stadium where the Royals play is also considered old, being the sixth oldest active MLB stadium and its first game was on April 10, 1973. Both stadiums are crucial to their respective communities and were heavily supported by fans through an ad campaign that featured Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce expressing their importance to Kansas City residents.

Despite his initial confidence in passing of this measure ,Chiefs owner Clark Hunt expressed his disappointment over this outcome .On his part ,Kansas City mayor Quinton Lucas acknowledged the strong fan base for both teams and reaffirmed his commitment to working with them to find a more inclusive and effective process moving forward to address stadium funding issues in Kansas City. Even though they may have faced a setback this time around , there is optimism that both teams will continue to call Kansas City home for many years to come .
