Register today for Fort Hays State University’s science and math summer camps for kids

Fort Hays State University’s Science and Mathematics Education Institute (SMEI) is hosting a range of summer camps for students in grades four through eight. Each camp runs for four days a week, Monday through Thursday, with sessions lasting three hours each in either the morning from 9 a.m. to noon or in the afternoon from 1 to 4 p.m. There is a limit of two camps per student and spaces are filling up quickly.

One of this year’s camps is the Main Street Math Camp for students in grades four through six, which will take place from June 3-6 in the afternoon. Students will work in teams on hands-on activities to design, build, and operate their own store on Main Street. Another camp, A Sense of Place: Designing for Folklore and Fairytale, is available for students in grades five through eight from June 10-13, where they will create their own short story through illustration, image scanning, and 3D modeling.

For students in grades five through seven with an interest in engineering, there is Camp North Star which focuses on activities such as CAD design, rocket designs and robotics. For students in grades four through eight with an interest in robotics, there are camps like Robot O Rama and Robo Challenge where they can learn to build, program and test LEGO robots or custom build robots for real-world situations.

The registration fee for each camp is $70, with a registration deadline of May 3. Registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis, with a maximum of two camps per student. Interested participants can contact Cari Rohleder at 785.628
