The World’s Leading Chipmaker, Taiwan, Confronts Energy Shortage

Taiwan’s incoming president, Lai Ching-te, has outlined ambitious goals for the country’s energy mix. One of his main objectives is to increase the proportion of renewable electricity production to 30% by 2030, a significant leap from the current 11%. Additionally, he aims to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. However, there are doubts among some individuals about his ability to fulfill these promises, particularly in the face of ongoing blackouts that have been plaguing the island.

When Tsai Ing-wen assumed office in 2016, she pledged to reduce carbon emissions while phasing out nuclear energy, which then accounted for 12% of the energy mix. Today, nuclear energy makes up less than 7% of electricity generation in Taiwan. Both Tsai and Lai are members of a party that is openly against nuclear power. Although this decision made sense ideologically, it has proven to be challenging in practice.

Liang Chi-yuan, from Taiwan’s National Central University, estimates that only a quarter of planned wind power projects were on schedule between 2017 and 2022. This raises questions about Taiwan’s ability to meet its ambitious goals and avoid an energy crunch amidst these energy-related challenges.

Taiwan is known as the source of over 60% of the world’s advanced semiconductors. As such, it faces the pressing question of whether it can avoid an energy crunch amidst these energy-related challenges. With an energy mix in transition and ambitious goals on the horizon, the country will need to address its energy infrastructure and policies to ensure a stable and sustainable energy future.
