Mount Vernon teachers stage a ‘walk-in’ protest demanding contract negotiations: We’re serious about our demands.

On Thursday, teachers from every school in Mount Vernon gathered for a “walk-in” rally before the start of the school day. The purpose of the rally was to advocate for a new contract as part of a citywide effort by teachers in Mount Vernon. Teachers were supported by passing drivers who honked in solidarity.

During the rally, teachers showed solidarity in hopes of pushing negotiations forward. Thalia Langley, vice president of the Mount Vernon Federation of Teachers K-8, emphasized the importance of recognizing the hard work and dedication of teachers to their students on a daily basis. Negotiations for a new contract have been ongoing for about two years, and teachers have expressed frustration with the slow progress. It has been three years since teachers in Mount Vernon received a raise.

As negotiations are scheduled to resume on Monday, union officials are hopeful that the message conveyed during the rally will have an impact on the next session.
