Incorporating Modern Technology into Sled Design

Old-fashioned street sledding is losing popularity in Norway, and Justin, also known as Garage Avenger, wanted to see if there was a way to bring the activity into the modern era. His solution was to equip a sled with powerful electric turbines that could quickly push passengers around on the ice.

Justin’s particular sled was designed for child-sized passengers, so he replaced fuel-burning jet engines with electric motors that can spin their turbine blades at an impressive 80,000 rpm. To get started, the antique sled needed to be refurbished, including removing rust from the runners and reconditioning the wood. With a strong foundation in place, Justin added 3D printed cowlings for the turbines, a thumb throttle on upgraded handlebars, and a big battery with an Arduino to power it all.

Once everything was assembled and ready to go, the powerful sled easily got its passengers up to speeds of 20-30 kph depending on passenger weight and size. There was even an emergency brake built on an old ice skate for sudden stops. The sled was a huge hit among everyone at the skating pond, proving that there are still plenty of ways to spruce up old sleds and bring them into the modern age.
