Soccer at the Paris 2024 Olympics

At the 2024 Olympics in Paris, football will make its return for its 29th Olympic appearance for men and eighth for women. In the men’s tournament, 16 teams will be split into four groups, with the top two from each group advancing to the quarter-finals. The women’s competition will feature 12 teams divided into three groups, with the top two from each group progressing, along with the two best third-placed teams.

The football schedule at Paris 2024 will run from July 24th to August 10th, using seven different stadia. Nice, St Etienne, and Bordeaux are among the venues for group stage and quarter-final matches. The semi-finals will take place in Lyon and Marseille, with the bronze medal match in Nantes and the final at Paris’ iconic Parc des Princes.

The basic rules for Olympic football are similar to regular football, with two teams of 11 players competing in 90-minute matches. Group stage matches may end in a draw, but knockout games will go to extra time and penalties if needed. There are no age restrictions for the women’s teams; however, only three players per squad in the men’s competition can be over 23 years old.

In Olympic football history, the USA is the most successful nation with eight medals, including four golds. Hungary follows closely with three gold medals out of their five total medals. Great Britain has won three gold medals but faced challenges in fielding teams for subsequent Olympics due to lack of support from Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish football associations. The women’s team also failed to qualify for the Olympics after England finished second in their Nations League group.
