Shoulder Tendon Tears Result in Muscle Wasting

Dr. Ho Van Duy An, a renowned orthopedic surgeon from the Trauma Center at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, has successfully treated Mr. Tu’s torn rotator cuff tendon using an allograft. The 63-year-old Mr. Tu had been experiencing shoulder pain for years due to heavy work, which eventually led to a complete transverse tear of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus tendons.

The rotator cuff muscle is made up of four tendons that play a vital role in arm extension and shoulder rotation movements. When Mr. Tu continued his strenuous activities without rest, the tear worsened over time, resulting in muscle atrophy and degeneration of the tendons. Dr. An recommended a tendon graft using an allograft, which acts as a bridge for the torn tendon to heal and attach to, improving the success rate of the surgery.

The surgery was performed using an endoscopic method, which is a minimally invasive technique with low infection risks. Within days after the surgery, Mr. Tu experienced relief from pain and improved mobility in his shoulder joint. He was able to perform basic movements and was on track for a full recovery within six months.

Dr. An emphasizes the importance of early detection and treatment of shoulder injuries to prevent complications such as long-term weakness or loss of movement and reduce the risk of developing shoulder arthritis. Patients should seek medical attention when experiencing shoulder pain, stiffness or weakness to receive appropriate care and prevent further damage.
