A Turkish physicist receives the prestigious science award in Germany.

Turkish physicist Professor Fatih Ömer İlday recently received the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship award, Germany’s most prestigious science prize. This recognition honors his research in fast laser technology and his contributions to the field of medicine. The award includes a 5-million-euro grant to establish a research unit at Ruhr-Universität Bochum, where he will continue his work on “laser matter interactions.”

Professor İlday earned his Ph.D. in physics from Cornell University in 2003 and later worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before joining Bilkent University as a professor in 2006. He has held a joint professorship in physics and electrical and electronics engineering since 2014, leading the Ultrafast Optics and Lasers Laboratory (UFOLAB). His extensive experience and expertise have made him a distinguished member of various scientific societies, including Academia Europaea, the Turkish Academy of Sciences, and the Turkish and American Physical Societies.

The Humboldt Professorship aims to attract top international researchers to Germany, recognizing Professor İlday’s outstanding contributions to the field of laser technology. With this funding, he will have the opportunity to continue making groundbreaking discoveries that will benefit society as a whole. As he embarks on this new journey, he remains committed to advancing our understanding of laser matter interactions and their potential applications in medicine and beyond.
