UM Health acquires former Kmart headquarters property for $4.4 million, aims to expand presence in Metro Detroit

The University of Michigan Health System announced plans to construct a multi-specialty facility at the former Kmart headquarters in Troy. The 7.8-acre property, located at 3100 West Big Beaver Road, was previously owned by Forbes/Frankel Troy Ventures LLC. The facility will focus on advanced specialty and diagnostic services, aimed at expanding clinical services and patient access in Oakland County.

The move is part of U-M Health’s effort to establish a broad network of care across the state, allowing more Michigan residents to access their services close to home. The new facility in Troy is seen as a strategic location to expand their reach and bring innovative clinical programs to a new community of patients.

The property is expected to be acquired for $4.42 million and will be presented for approval at the University of Michigan Board of Regents meeting. President of U-M Health, David Miller, believes that the facility will be a hub for advanced clinical programs like multi-disciplinary cancer care.

The headquarters, which has been empty for over 15 years, was set for demolition last fall. U-M Health plans to use this new investment to provide easier access to their world-class care for metro Detroit residents. Michigan Medicine CEO Marschall Runge sees this as a way to establish a presence in southeast Michigan and expand their clinical services in the region.
