University of Michigan Health Seeks Additional Resources to Support Mental Health Patients

The University of Michigan Health is looking to acquire additional health beds from the State of Michigan in order to address the mental health crisis in the state. As part of their plan, they aim to utilize the former Lansing Eastern High School, which is situated next to the UM Health – Sparrow emergency room in Lansing. Although the building has been abandoned for years, it will require renovations before it can be used for mental health patients.

UM Health believes that the building’s proximity to Sparrow’s emergency room is crucial for mental health patients, as a significant percentage of them are currently waiting for a bed. In an effort to address this issue, the group hopes to secure 120 beds at the facility. Additionally, they intend to preserve the history of the Lansing Eastern High School as they move forward with their plans.
