The American military base at Pearl Harbor, located in Hawaii, has a rich and storied history. However, the base now faces a new threat: suspicion of Chinese espionage. In recent years, there have been numerous cases of Chinese citizens attempting to gain unauthorized access to or spy on the base.
Documents obtained by the Supervision Project of think tank The Heritage Foundation reveal that at least 14 cases involving attempted illegal access or surveillance by Chinese citizens have occurred at or near Pearl Harbor since 2018. These documents were published on the website The Daily Signal and provided by the Navy Consolidated Law Enforcement Operations Center as a result of a request under the U.S. Freedom of Information Act.
While The Heritage Foundation tried to obtain information about possible incidents of Chinese espionage at various American bases, only Pearl Harbor decided to collaborate and provide the records they had on attempted infiltrations.
The cases mentioned in the documents include instances of Chinese people attempting to fly drones over the base and taking photos of military installation’s entry points. These attempts raise serious concerns and have been investigated by both NCIS and the U.S. Navy’s police agency.
According to The Daily Signal, incidents of suspected Chinese espionage in recent years also include two individuals who were detained due to circumstances that were deemed suspicious. Chinese citizens have tried to enter the base and even engaged in car chases around the area.
