The world of video games has been turned on its head once again, with Momotaro Dentetsu World: The Earth Spins with Hope claiming the top spot in the Japanese monthly charts. According to Famitsu retail sales data, the Konami title sold 153,137 copies in January, surpassing Super Mario Bros Wonder, which came in second with 151,569 units sold.
However, it’s not just Konami that’s making headlines. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth debuted on PS5 and ranked third with 102,940 units sold, while the PS4 version came in at No.6 with 77,134 copies sold. Combined, the game would have comfortably taken the top spot.
It’s also worth noting that Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island secured the fifth spot with 85,424 copies sold. This new entry is quickly becoming one of the most popular games of the month.
In terms of hardware sales across three versions, Switch was the highest-selling hardware with 241,282 units sold. The OLED model was even more popular than expected and took up a significant portion of these sales. PS5 followed closely behind in second place with 185,480 units sold and Xbox came in at No.3 with 7,654 units sold.
Nintendo held a commanding lead over Sega and Konami when it comes to physical game unit sales during this period. They accounted for 34.1%, 12.3%, and 10.2% respectively of all physical game units sold from January 1 to January 28th in Japan (excluding digital downloads). It looks like Nintendo is dominating this market right now!
